What is Clinical Genetics?
Clinical genetics is the medical specialty which provide diagnostic services and genetic counseling to individual and families with, or at risk of, medical conditions which may have a genetic basis with latest exploration of epigenetic/environmental influences.
Genetic disorders can affect any body system and any age group.
The aim of genetics is to help those affected by, or at risk of a genetic disorder to live as normally as possible.
Genetic disorders include:
-
Chromosomal abnormalities, which cause birth defects, learning disabilities and/or reproductive problems.
-
Single gene disorders such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, Huntington's disease and sickle cell disease.
-
Familial cancer and cancer-prone syndromes such as inherited breast or colorectal cancer and neurofibromatosis.
-
Birth defects and/or developmental, either physical and/or psychological.
-
Neurodivergence like many complex conditions is both genetics and environment or epigenetic.
-
Multisystem unresolved medical issues and complex common conditions (eg. Connective tissue spectrum such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) spectrum including POTS, MCAD, etc.)
In the future, as the genetic contributions to common later-onset disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and coronary heart disease are identified, genetic services may be required for those at high risk.

-
Persons with questions about genetic or familial diseases.
-
Couples with fertility problems such as repeated miscarriages.
-
Individuals concerned about a family history of learning disabilities.
-
Anyone seeking information and counseling about a genetic or possible genetic condition.
-
Families of children with birth defects or malformations.
-
Families with arthritic conditions.
-
Families with unresolved multi-systems problems.
